Welcome!

Tom Johnstone here!

I am currently a Piping Instructor and a member of the Solo Piping Adjudicators panel, having had a successful solo piping career.

President of Scottish Pipers' Association 2014 - 2020

I have played in three Grade 1 Pipe Bands - Muirhead and Sons Ltd, British Caledonian Airways, and Scottish Power.

I was Pipe-Major of Rolls Royce Pipe-Band and took the band to the Festival Interceltique Lorient which I loved. I became a frequent visitor and have been Scottish Delegate for the Lorient Festival since 2008

Learning to play the pipes is no more difficult than learning any other instrument - it requires hard work and dedication. You can start learning from about age 8 or 9.....

Would  you like to be able to play in a pipe-band some day? - or become a solo piper either playing in competitions or for your own enjoyment?

Why the Bagpipes?

It's our national instrument and there is no greater sound than to hear the pipes played well either by a solo piper or a well turned-out pipe-band.

Playing the pipes can also open a lot of doors - I have played in over 36 countries - I lost count at that number! - but they include America, Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Dubai, France, Germany, Spain, Russia, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Gambia, Moldova..............

Over the sea............. - not to Skye, but to the Island of Gigha!
